Systemic oppression: struggle for equality not yet over – African Bar Association President

By Ebere Agozie

Mr Ibrahim Mark, President, African Bar Association (AFBA) says the painful legacy of slavery, racial segregation, discrimination, and systemic oppression remains a solemn reminder that the struggle for equality is not yet over.

Mark made the assertion during his speech at the ongoing 2026 Annual Conference of the National Conference of Black Lawyers (NCBL) in New York.

The theme of the conference is “Organising Intergenerational Warriors Against State-Sponsored Violence and Political Repression—Here and Abroad”.

In an address made available to the News Agency Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Mark reaffirmed that AfBA will continue to stand as a generational ally of the National Conference of Black Lawyers.

The AfBA President added that no society can truly prosper where justice is unequal, dignity is conditional, and the colour of one’s skin determines the treatment one receives from the state.

He noted that Africa and Black communities in America share an enduring bond forged by history, ancestry, struggle, resilience, and an unbreakable aspiration for freedom, dignity, and justice.

“We recognise and celebrate the immense contributions of Black Americans to the growth of the United States in law, science, education, business, politics, culture, and virtually every sphere of human endeavour.

“Yet, it remains deeply concerning that racial prejudice, discriminatory profiling, unequal treatment, and disproportionate security enforcement continue to threaten the fundamental rights and dignity of Black people.

“We must therefore organise across generations, borders, and institutions to confront state-sponsored violence, resist political repression, and strengthen the institutions that protect human rights and the rule of law”.

He prayed for a new dawn of progress, peace, inclusion, and prosperity for Black communities in America.

“A future where equality is not merely proclaimed but practised, where justice is accessible to all, and where every person enjoys the full protection of the law and equal opportunities to pursue the good things of life.

“We shall continue to support your noble struggle for equal and unbiased treatment, accountability in public institutions, access to justice, and the protection of fundamental human rights, here in America and across the world.

“As we deliberate on this theme, may we renew our commitment to intergenerational solidarity, courageous advocacy, and collective action”.

He, thereafter, called for firm voices, unwavering resolve, and collective relentless pursuit of justice.

“The struggle for justice knows no borders, and the defence of human dignity is our common responsibility”.

He wished the NCBL a successful and impactful conference.
