NANS backs EFCC fight against financial crimes, warns against abuse

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has expressed its support to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Ado-Ekiti Zonal Command’s operations against financial crimes in the zone.

The Chief of Staff to the President of NANS, Comr. Adegoke Ademola, said this in a statement on Thursday in Abuja.

According to the statement, the association supports the mandate of the commission to investigate, prevent and prosecute financial crimes, and holds that no Nigerian, regardless of status, should be above the law.

NANS submitted that a Nigeria free from fraud would allow institutions to function better and give citizens greater confidence in the system.

It, however, cautioned the anti-graft agency against high-handedness in its operations

NANS warned that lawful enforcement must not become a source of intimidation for students.

”The association is not against the activities of the anti-graft agency and does not condone financial crimes in any form.”

It was speaking against the backdrop of the EFCC’s operations in the early hours of Thursday in Akure, Ondo State, though it did not provide further details on the specific incident or the individuals affected.

”The association is a stakeholder in nation-building and totally opposed to fraud and every act capable of undermining the country’s integrity.

”NANS, however, opposes any form of illegal abuse, harassment, intimidation, or operation that makes our students feel unsafe or threatened.”

While acknowledging the lawful duties of security agencies, it stressed that such duties must remain within the bounds of the law and respect the safety and dignity of Nigerian students.
