Bride’s 95-Year-Old Grandfather Steals the Show as ‘Flower Boy’ at Her Wedding One Year After Near-Fatal Fall

A bride’s grandfather stole the show when he served as “flower boy” at her wedding. The moment was especially emotional, as the 95-year-old almost died a year before the nuptials.

Bert Edlin suffered a serious fall that left him needing to be resuscitated, per SWNS. Doctors told his family that if he managed to survive, he would likely not be able to walk, talk or even eat again. He had to have a tracheotomy after developing vocal cord palsy from the fall.

But Bert defied the odds — and it was his granddaughter, Rachel Powell, who gave him the special motivation that inspired his miraculous recovery. Rachel, 29, told him that she wanted him to be her “flower grandpa” — instead of a traditional flower girl — at her upcoming wedding to now-husband Andy Powell.

“I believed he would get better, and it was during that time that I said I wanted to honor him and make him feel really special,” she recalled. “I asked him to be my flower grandpa, and that became such a big part of his recovery.”

“He was still unable to talk at that point,” she continued, “but he wrote a note that said, ‘I will make it to your wedding.’ “

And he did just that. Sixteen months after his fall, Bert donned a dapper suit and walked down the aisle on the arm of a bridesmaid. He delighted wedding guests as he smiled and carried a basket of flower petals that he sprinkled along the way.

Reflecting on the moment, Bert said, “I can’t believe I got to watch my granddaughter get married.”

“Believe anything is possible,” he continued. “You see, I am still here. I got to make the wedding, and that is the main thing.”

Rachel shared that her grandfather at first didn’t understand what he was being asked to do, but “once we explained it to him, he was very much ready for the role.”

She described Bert as someone who “loves to make people laugh and smile” and is “always the first on the dance floor.”

Amy Dumphries, a content creator who captured the emotional wedding moment on film, told SWNS that Bert’s performance as “flower grandpa” was unforgettable.

“It is definitely the first time I have ever seen anything like it before,” she said. “I remember when Rachel and I were talking through the plans for the day, I knew she was going to have a spectacular wedding.”

In other special wedding details, Rachel wrote poems for all of her guests and organized a flash mob during the ceremony.

“I was super excited to marry my husband, but for me, it was also about having everyone you love together in one room,” she said. “I really wanted to make it special for the people who are special to me.”
