The Police in Delta have arrested a 46-year-old security guard, who allegedly raped an eight-year-old girl in Ibusa community in Oshimili North Local Government Area of the state.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Aug. 24 at an uncompleted building in the community.
The command Spokesperson, DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, told journalists on Tuesday in Asaba that the suspect was caught in the act by his neighbours.
“The suspect was caught in the act by his neighbours after he lured the little girl into the building,” Onovwakpoyeya said.
However, a community source said the suspect worked as a security guard at the building site, which is close to the victim’s residence.
“We learnt from the little girl that the suspect lured her on the pretense that he wants to send her on an errand.
“Her parents were looking for her, so they alerted people in the area and a woman in the neighborhood said she saw her going into the uncompleted building.
“We went into the building and caught him defiling the little girl.
“When we caught him, we found that he tied the hands of the girl before taking her into the building,” the source said.
The source disclosed that the father of the victim, who is a Pentecostal clergy, had refused to press for criminal charges to avoid stigmatization of the child.
The source said aggrieved residents of the area, however, arrested the suspects and handed him over to the police at Ibusa Police Station.
