Chief Henry Agbaje, the President of an Ile-Tuntun Customary Court in Ibadan on Friday dissolved a 15-year-old marriage between one Olalekan Coker and his wife, Ayokunmi on grounds of arrogance and nagging.
In his judgment, Agbaje held that there might be blood shed if the court refused to put an end to the union.
“Therefore, the union between Olalekan and Ayokunmi has ceased to be henceforth in the interest of peaceful living,” the arbitrator said.
He awarded custody of the three children produced by the union to Ayokunmi and ordered Olalekan to pay N15,000 as the children’s monthly feeding allowance in addition to being responsible for their education and other welfare.
Earlier, Olalekan, a resident of Odoona community in Ibadan told the court that his wife had become an oppressor over his household.
He said that Ayokunmi was notorious for sending away his relatives whenever they came visiting.
“Ayokunmi fought and sent my two younger siblings packing when they came to stay with us for a while.
“When my mother was ill, I brought her to my house for proper care since my wife is a nurse, but Ayokunmi kept nagging and forced her out as soon as she recovered.
“She told me that she doesn’t want to see any member of my family in our matrimonial home again.
“Ayokunmi is so arrogant that she frequently threaten to attack and even rain curses on me at will,” he said.
He told the court that Ayokunmi usually lay hands on dangerous objects around such as digger to break doors and vandalise dick holder, TV set and so on whenever she was annoyed.
He said that he reported her at the Orita-Challenge Police Station on July 16 and 27 when she threatened my life and destroyed my property.
“I want the court to end our marriage because she has not stopped threatening to wreak havoc in my home,” Olalekan said.
Ayokunmi, however, objected the suit and denied all the allegations leveled against her.
The mother of three, who earned her living as a nurse, contended that her mother in-law was the major problem in her marriage.
“Anytime she comes around, she complained that I don’t know how to cook soup and because of that I allowed her take over my kitchen.
“When I was seriously sick, Olalekan did not take care of me and I had to go to Abeokuta for treatment.
“Before I returned, my husband had married one of my closest friends, but I sent her away and we reunited again.
“Please my lord, don’t terminate our union, I am ready to turn a new leaf.
“I am even ready to write and sign an undertaking to be of good behaviour,” Ayokunmi said, while on her kneels.
