Seven persons were arrested by the Police Command in Edo over alleged possession of firearms.

The seven suspects, who were believed to have made confessionary statements to the Police, were said to have been arrested within the precinct of the Edo State House Assembly during the alleged invasion of the assembly on Thursday.

A Police source, who pleaded anonymity, said the arrested thugs have all confessed that they were mobilized by the Special Advisers to Gov. Godwin Obaseki.

The source said the arrest was made when the police responded to an emergency call from the 17 elected members of the Assembly who came under attack by thugs reportedly directed by the governor to prevent plenary from holding at the complex.

He said they were arrested within the premises of the assembly complex with five double-barrel long guns, two single barrel long guns, and ten live cartridges.

The State Police Command spokesman, DSP Chidi Nwabuzor, could neither confirm nor deny the arrest.

According to him, “I have not been properly briefed about the arrest and I do not have the permission of my boss to speak on the matter.”

Similarly, one of the aide of the governor who was alleged to have mobilised the thugs, did not pick calls put through to his mobile phone nor reply messages sent to his line.
