Gunmen, suspected to be members of a cult gang, on Sunday invaded Azikoro-Agbura, Yenagoa, and killed one Senitonkumo Otu, popularly known as Murphy.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Otu, an artisan in his mid thirties, was short dead by the hoodlums on Sunday night near his residence.

The victim’s neighbour who spoke to NAN on condition of anonymity said that Otu might have been mistakenly killed for  another target of the cultists.

He said that the cultists were on a mission to search for their target known as ‘Peerooo’ before Otu accidentally met them and was shot in the process.

The source expressed shock over the incident and called on the State Government and security agencies to protect them against men of the underworld who were now frequently invading the area.

Mr Allen Ofoin, landlord of the deceased described Otu as a law abiding and easy going person.

Pere Tuboebi and Father Dokpere, who reside in the same building with Otu, said that power outage and poor policing could be responsible for the rising wave of criminal activities in the area.

NAN reports that the policemen from Azikoro Police station and some family members took the corpse of the deceased to the mortuary.

The Bayelsa Police Spokesman, SP Asinim Butswat, confirmed the incident and said that the state command was still awaiting the detailed briefing from the Divisional Police Officer in Azikoro division.
