The Police Command in Adamawa on Thursday said that a 78-year-old man and four others had been arrested for allegedly gang-raping a 33-year-old woman in Yola, the state capital.

Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Command, DSP Sulaiman Nguroje, announced the arrest in a statement he issued in Yola.

Nguroje said that the five suspects, including the 78-year-old Muhammed Ali, were among the nine-person syndicate, dislodged by the police at Gerio, an outskirt, in Yola North Local Government Area of the state, on June 13, 2020.

“On June 13, 2020, following a report from a 33-year-old lady that she has been raped by the syndicate of nine at Gerio, a remote side of Jambutu in Yola North LGA.

“The police operatives attached to the Command’s Monitoring Team were deployed and arrested  Ahmadu Ismail, 20; Salu Buba, 25, and Muhammed Ali, 78. “Others are: Abubakar Ali, 28 and a 30-year-old female, Zainab Jafaru.

“The incident  happened on June 12, 2020, when the fifth suspect, Zainab Jafaru, deceived the complainant, to accompany her to see her boyfriend.

“Upon arrival,  Zainab’s  boyfriend, now on the run and his gang, forcefully had sexual intercourse with the complainant, one after another,” Nguroje said.

The spokesman noted that the command immediately swung into action and apprehended five, out of  the nine suspects, including Zainab, who was arrested for abetting.

Nguroje said the arrests were made, few hours after the Command had met with and assured officers of the National Human Rights Commission, involved in the fight against Rape and Gender-Based Violence, of its commitment to the war against GBV in the state.

The spokesman said the command would continue to double its commitment toward the fight against rape and sexual assault in Adamawa.
