The Police on Monday, arraigned one Matthew Akuruyejo, 25, in an Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court over alleged assault and battery on a defence counsel, Mr Babawale Omodogbe.
The Prosecutor, Inspector Sunday Osanyintuyi, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on March 15 at about 6:45 pm at Progressive Gents Movement Club house, Obalogun Street, Ile-Ife.
Osanyintuyi said that the defendant conspired with others now at large to commit the offence.
He added that the defendant conducted himself in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace by causing trouble in the community.
According to him, the defendant assaulted one Babawale Omodogbe, with a stick which caused him injury on his nose.
Osanyintuyi said that the defendant further assaulted Adewumi Olumide, Olaniyi Adeoye, Olatunji Oladapo, Adebayo Kehinde and Kayode Baderinwa with fist blows.
The prosecutor stated that the defendant also stole one Rolex wrist watch and cash of N250,000, all with a total valued N420,000, property of Babawale Omodogbe.
He explained to the court that the defendant maliciously damaged plastic chairs and tables, (values yet unknown), property of Progressive Gents Movement Club.
Osanyintuyi said that the offence contravened Sections 249(d), 355, 383, 390(9) and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun State, 2002.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the 10-count charge bordering on conspiracy, intent to commit felony, breach of peace, assault, stealing and malicious damage.
The Defence Counsel, Mrs Tosin Omoyeni, pleaded for bail of the defendant in most Liberal terms, and pledged that her client would not jump bail, and would provide reliable sureties.
Magistrate Muhibah Olatunji admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N200,000, with two sureties in like sum.
Olatunji said that the sureties must swear to affidavits of means, reside within the court’s jurisdiction and that their addresses must be verified by the prosecutor.
She added that one of the sureties must be a blood relation of the defendant while the second surety must possess three years tax clearance certificate of the state as well as produce three recent passport photographs each.
The case was adjourned until July 6, for hearing.
