African Bar Association congratulates Judge Pillay on 2026 Nobel Peace Prize win

By Ebere Agozie

The African Bar Association (AfBA) has congratulated Judge Navi Pillay on her announcement as the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize winner.

The President of AfBA, Mr Ibrahim Mark in his congratulatory message described Pillay as a distinguished jurist and an internationally respected advocate for human rights, justice, equality, and human dignity.

“We commend Pillay’s enduring contributions to humanity and her continued advocacy for human rights and peaceful coexistence among nations and peoples.

“Her work stands as a source of inspiration to legal practitioners, judicial officers, human rights defenders, and future generations across Africa and beyond.

“Her remarkable career and lifelong commitment to the advancement of human rights will continue to inspire the legal profession and people across the world.

Mark recalled with great pride that Pillay served as a keynote speaker at the Association’s Renaissance Conference held in Harare, Zimbabwe, in 2016.

He noted that her participation in that historic gathering remained a cherished memory and reflects the longstanding relationship between the Association and distinguished figures committed to justice and the rule of law.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalled that Pillay made history as the first Black woman appointed to the High Court of South Africa.

She subsequently served as United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, where she played a significant role in advancing the global human rights agenda.
Pillay, throughout her distinguished career, had consistently championed justice, accountability, equality, and the protection of fundamental freedoms.
