The Conservator General of the National Park Service, Mr. Ibrahim Goni, has urged Nigerians to adopt organic farming to promote healthier lifestyles and ensure food security across the nation. Speaking at a 2-day training session aimed at promoting resilient food systems, Goni highlighted the importance of organic agriculture in enhancing both food and nutritional security.
The training, which was organized by the Federation Nationale pour l’Agriculture Biologique and the Knowledge Centre for Organic Agriculture in Africa (KCOA), took place in Abuja from July 18 to 19, 2024. During the event, Goni encouraged Nigerians to utilize empty spaces in their homes for small-scale gardening, which he believes will contribute to food security and healthier living.
He emphasized that the current administration’s focus on food security, under President Bola Tinubu, is resonating with citizens. “We support President Bola Tinubu’s efforts on food security. I encourage all Nigerians to grow their own food, ensuring that every family has something to eat.”
The event attracted a wide variety of participants, including full-time farmers and journalists who are also part-time farmers. Goni expressed confidence that the training would inspire attendees to implement and share the knowledge gained, thereby spreading the message to grassroots communities.
Dr. Jude Obi, President of the Association of Organic Agriculture Practitioners in Nigeria, advised participants to absorb the training’s content and pass it on to others. He suggested that even small spaces, like home gardens, could be used to grow organic vegetables.
Mrs. Ebere Agozie, a Master Trainer, highlighted the harmful effects of synthetic chemicals used in conventional farming. She urged Nigerians to switch to organic foods to avoid these dangerous substances and protect their health.
Dr. Rasheedah Sadiq, an expert in probiotic farming, spoke about the benefits of organic farming for lifestyle improvements. She emphasized that organic food helps detoxify the body and offers anti-aging properties by avoiding growth hormones in crops and livestock.
