Dr Osahon Enabulele, the President, Commonwealth Medical Association (CMA), has commended the management of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) for its commitment, patriotism and excellence in curtailing the spread of COVID-19.
Enabulele gave the commendation while speaking with newsmen shortly after an inspection of the hospital on Friday in Benin.
Enabulele called on federal and state governments to increase support in terms of manpower and materials for the institution being a reference centre.
He said that majority of the efforts of the hospital had been from the management’s initiative and internal resources.
“UBTH is doing greatly and I have good impression of how far it has gone in terms of helping to curtail COVID-19 in the state.
“Even with the lean resources made available to the hospital, I have seen commitment, some level of patriotism, and excellence being displayed in this hospital.
“This is a commendable effort by management. I hope and pray that the hospital gets the level of support it require from both the federal and state government.
“The hospital needs a lot of support, it needs more personal protective equipment to work with,” he said.
Enabulele said it was part of the association’s commitment to support government and institutions to assess how the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic was being curtailed.
“Across the commonwealth, we have commissioned teams to go round, do some level of assessment and support for the government.
“Since l am from this state, it is my duty to lead in that direction. As part of that effort, I have come here to assess what is on ground in University of Benin Teaching Hospital,” he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Enabulele inspected the Isolation Centre including the Holding Ward, the Intensive Care Unit with dedicated ventilators.
He also inspected the PCR Laboratory, where COVID-19 tests were to be carried out, among other places relevant for the management of the disease.
