Armed bandits allegedly killed two police officers serving in Obowo Police Division, Imo while three officers were seriously injured.

The bandits attacked the station at the early hours of Saturday.

The reason for the attack was yet to be ascertained, but a Youth Leader in Obowo who spoke on condition of anonymity said that the bandits were repelled by policemen on duty.

“This incident happened around 2am when we started hearing gunshots but when some of us got to the scene, we met some of the officers dead while some were critically injured.

“The bandits tried to gain access to the police armoury and also tried to release some detainees but were resisted by the police forces,”  he said.

The development had, however,  caused serious panic in the area as some families within the community fled to safer areas.

The Police Public Relations Officer SP Orlando Ikeokwu confirmed the incident but said police had begun serious investigations into the matter.

“We got report that Obowo Police Division was attacked, two officers killed and three injured.

“The bandits were seriously repelled by the officers, but unfortunately we lost two of our men.

“They could not gain access to the police armoury and I assure you that the fleeing bandits will be apprehended,”he said.
