The Commissioner of Police in Anambra, Mr John Abang has ordered the detention of Policemen allegedly  involved in the shooting of a commercial motorcycle operator at Igboukwu in Aguata Local Area on Tuesday.

Mr Haruna Mohammed, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) disclosed this in a statement made available to newsmen in Awka on Wednesday.

Mohammed said the commissioner directed full scale investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

He said preliminary investigation revealed that on Dec. 15, 2020 at about 10:30pm, there was an altercation between police operatives and motorcycle riders over some impounded motorcycles.

According to him, the seizure was a result of the recent restriction on movement of motorcycles beyond 9:00pm in the state.

“However, the situation degenerated into chaos which led to an accidental discharge that hit one motorcycle rider and burning of Igboukwu police station by irate youths.

“The commissioner appealed for calm and assured the public that justice will be done in the case, noting that the outcome of police investigation will  be made public in due course,” Mohammed said.

Although, the PPRO declined comment on whether the victim lost his life, our correspondent gathered that two persons allegedly lost their lives during the chaos.

He further gathered that the irate youths also attacked Oko Police station, Ekwulobia Police station and former SARS office Ekwulobia on Wednesday to protest the alleged shooting.
