Project Enable Africa, a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) , said that it had embarked on a door-to-door-food-drive initiative for Persons Living with Disabilities (PWDs).
Mr Olusola Owonikoko, the founder of the NGO in a statement he made available to newsmen on Tuesday said that his NGO was devoted to the digital empowerment of PWDs in Nigeria.
He said that the food-drive initiative was targeted at providing food for 1,000 families across Lagos.
He said that some families had benefitted in different local government areas of Lagos as a way of reducing the spread of Covid-19 pandemic.
“We acknowledge that the present situation across the globe is a challenging one and we can’t leave the bulk of the Covid-19 response to government alone.
“We realised a lacuna in many of the intervention programmes in the country as many weren’t conscious of the community of persons with disabilities, who indeed are one of the most vulnerable at this trying time,” he said.
Owonikoko said that PWDs should be carried along among those to receive palliatives, adding that his NGO had decided to take the lead in that regard.
“Our main focus is the digital and socio-economic empowerment of PWDs in Nigeria, and their successful integration into the workplace and the society at large.
“Earlier in March, we completed the first cohort of our 2020 digital training for PWDs just before the lockdown started.
“But with the overwhelming feedback we received daily from the communities, we couldn’t shy away from the need for food, hence, we came up with the Covid-19 food-drive initiative,” he said.
Owonikoko said that their packages basically contained sizeable essentials such as: rice, pasta, beans, ‘garri’, and vegetable oil.
