Nigerian born Afrobeat Singer and Social Justice Crusader, Ayokanmi Oluwasegun Eyanro professionally known as Frequencie has stated that free and fair is an integral part of Universal Declaration human rights.
Frequencie in a statement issued on Tuesday to commemorate 2020 International Democracy Day said conducting credible elections, rule of law, respect of human rights and other tenets of democracy are still lacking in Nigeria’s Political space.
Frequencie said this year theme ”Democracy under Strain: Solutions for a Changing World” is apt and relatable with the multifaceted issues bedevilling democratic rule in the country.
The Afrobeat Rockstar from North Central State insisted that the militarization of electoral process, state backed violence, thuggery, rigging, vote buying and manipulation of electoral process by key players are major drawbacks of democracy in Nigeria and other African countries.
He condemned the sit tight attitude of some African leaders through amendments of constitution to security tenure elongation, noting that such actions will only brew crisis as evident in Mali and other nations.
Frequencie therefore charged African Union, Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) and other key stakeholders to encourage African leaders to uphold democratic tenets, respect human rights and rule of law.
He also urged Nigerian youths to play active role in political process and shun electoral violence, saying ‘The future is bright, if we stand up for our rights!’
