Nigeria Conservation Foundation commemorates international vulture awareness day

Nigerian Conservation Foundation holds 'Green Ball' to promote nature and  people. | Leverage Impact

The Nigeria Conservation Foundation (NCF) the premier Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) in on Tuesday September 8, 2020, organized digital Zoom meeting to discuss numerous threats to the survival of Vultures while creating the needed public awareness of the event. 

The digital zoom forum was in partnership with Egyptian Vulture New life Project, Birdlife International, A.G Leventis Foundation, Foundation Natura 2000.

According to the host, Mr Harry Hanson Junior, an NCF/HNWCP Officer, the event had three lecturers from the Federal University, Duste to speak on different topics.

Hanson said Dr Sulaiman Inuwa Muhammad spoke on Vultures: misunderstood bird species, Abubakar S. Ringim on Threats to Vultures and conservation while Paul Tersoo Apaverga spoke on the Important of Vultures in maintaining a healthy environment.

While highlighting the significance of the event, Hanson informed the audience that first Saturday in September each year has been set aside as IVAD globally 

“Vultures are an ecologically vital group of birds that face a range of threats in many areas they occur and are under pressure and some species of these misunderstood birds are facing extinction.

“The International Vulture Awareness Day (IVAD) has grown from the Birds of prey programme of the Endangered Wildlife Trust in South Africa and the Hawk Conservancy Trust in England who decided to work together and expanded the initiative into an International event. 

“This IVAD day does not only raise awareness about vulture numbers but also educates the general public too.

He said added that NCF is dedicated to nature/species conservation and sustainable development in Nigeria with a vision of `Nigeria where people prosper while living in harmony with nature. 

“The Mission is to preserve the full range of Nigeria’s biodiversity which includes species, ecosystem, and genetic diversity, promote the sustainable use of natural resources  for the benefit of present and future generations, and advocate actions that minimize pollution and wasteful utilization of renewable resources.
