We are at the midpoint of the year, a good time to look at the best moments of our 2024 sporting calendar so far. It’s been a rollercoaster of emotions for football fans who passionately follow their favourite football clubs. While events unravelled in the football world, there were also notable historic moments in other sports during this period. Let’s relive some of the top moments shared together on GOtv in the last few months and take a look at what’s still to come this year.
United and City pick up vital wins: In what is arguably the most surprising plot twist in the football script for the season, Manchester United defied the odds by beating their bitter rivals, Manchester City, to win their 13th FA Cup title. A week earlier, City had just set a Premier League record for winning 4 League titles in a row; a record that was previously held by United at 3 titles on the trot. After a keenly contested season, Pep Guardiola’s men beat West Ham 3-1 on the final day of the season to clinch the title ahead of Arsenal to make Premier League history.
Birth of a star at GOtv Boxing Night 31: While the football world continued to serve its entertainment, a new star was born in the Nigerian boxing scene. At the 31st edition of GOtv Boxing Night held on May 1, 16-year-old Raheem “Badoo” Animashaun, emerged the best boxer of the night, taking home a cash prize of N1 million and the Mojisola Ogunsanya Memorial Trophy. He defeated an experienced opponent, Samuel “Apataroro” Moses, in a match that was broadcast live on GOtv in over 50 African countries.
When Ademola Lookman made history: A handful of Super Eagles stars have won European titles at club level, but none of them stole the show on the big night like Lookman did during the 2024 Europa League final. It was a night of mixed reactions for millions of Nigerian football fans as Lookman became the first player in Europa League/UEFA Cup history to score a hat-trick in the final. As the saying goes in the football world “the streets will never forget” that performance. On the other hand, Victor Boniface and Nathan Tella had to settle for silver medals with their Leverkusen team – their first and only loss of the entire football season.
Crowning of The New Undisputed WWE Universal Champion: WrestleMania 40, the biggest event in the wrestling calendar year, held on April 6- 7, live on GOtv. The main fight saw Cody Rhodes defeat Roman Reigns in a Bloodline Rules match, to win SmackDown’s Undisputed WWE Universal Championship. GOtv customers also enjoyed the emotional celebration that followed, as Rhodes was joined on stage by his mother, his wife Brandi Rhodes, Randy Orton, Triple H, CM Punk, Jey Uso, Sami Zayn, Kevin Owens, LA Knight, Cena, Rollins, Bruce Prichard and Triple H.
UCL Final: At the climax of the season, GOtv customers enjoyed the biggest match in European club football, as Champions League royalty club, Real Madrid, claimed their 15th UCL title courtesy of a hard-fought 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund at Wembley.
Still to Come: Club football season has ended, but football fest continues on GOtv.
