Sen. Gaya Kabiru, Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says he has no objections to the clamour for the southern part of Nigeria to produce the next president in 2023.
Gaya, representing Kano-South Senatorial District, Kano State, expressed his view on Monday in Abuja.
He said the northern part had produced a president for two tenures, in the person of President Muhammadu Buhari whom he described as doing well to develop the country.
“I believe President Muhammadu Buhari is doing his best.
“For the issue of presidency in 2023, I will support a president from the southern part of this country.
“I believe it is time we have president from the Southern part of this country and vice president from the North.
“I think it would be fair to be rotational in such a way that people have confidence; both the north and the south should accommodate each other.
“Nigeria needs to be one country; one united country.”
On the clamour for restructuring, Gaya said Nigeria should remain one indivisible country while improving its revenue generation.
“God knows best why he put us together; for God to put us together as a country, I believe there is a reason for it.
“But, when you say you want to restructure the country in such a way of revenue generation, in such a way that each State lives on its own or parts of the nation, in terms of tribes, strive on their own, I think that is the thinking of only a few Nigerians.
“I believe that Nigeria should remain one as an indivisible country.”
The lawmaker stressed the need for Nigeria to harness its natural resources for development of the country.
“We are very lucky God loves Nigeria. I think it is one of the countries God loves most because it is a country where all these natural disasters are not here.
“In Nigeria, we don’t have snow, earth quake and volcanic eruptions; in Nigeria, we have no rainfall that sweeps whole States.
“In Nigeria, our temperature and climate are good. We do not have forest fires that burn whole States like in the U.S.
“God has blessed this country. Even our rainfall is normal and we have vast virgin lands that are un-utilised.
“If we continue to improve our agriculture, I am sure we will be the best.”
Gaya recalled that when he visited India, only Punjap State was producing about 70 per cent of the wheat consumed in the entire country, despite the huge population of India.
“So, if we can improve on agriculture in our country, we will be self-sufficient in food.
“When President Buhari banned importation of rice, we all went back to farming. I am also a farmer growing rice and other crops.
