The Minister of Communications and Digital economy, Dr Isa Pantami, has stressed the need for accountability and professionalism in the practice of journalism.
Pantami said this during a courtesy visit to the Managing Director of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Mr Buki Ponle, in Abuja.
The minister emphasised the need for journalists to exhibit the highest standard of professionalism to positively impact society.
“It is part of accountability that we differentiate between professional journalists and quacks.
“If you agree to serve the government, then you must be accountable in whatever you do.
“We are always ready for that; it is very important that all journalists become professionals,” Pantami said.
In his remarks, Mr Ponle who thanked the Minister for his visit, called for government to government partnerships to enable growth and development in all the sectors of the country.
“For more than 40 years, we have been into this (journalism).
“We intend to forge the partnership between NAN and your ministry in this era of misinformation, disinformation.
“We try, as much as possible, to correct these in our reports.
“When you talk to NAN, you have talked to the whole world; we are not just saying it, we do what we say.
