Defection: Matawalle supporters takeover streets of Gusau, PDP billboards, others changed

The All Progressives Congress (APC) supporters from all nooks and cranies of Zamfara have taken over the streets of Gusau, the state capital to witness the defection of Gov. Bello Matawalle from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to APC.

A drive round the metropolis showed all roads leading to the Gusau Trade Fair Ground, venue of the event where APC National Leadership under the chairmanship of Gov. Mai-Mala Buni will formally receive his Zamfara counterpart into the APC.

Matawalle who was elected on the platform of the PDP in the 2019 general election is to formally announce his exit from to party to the ruling APC at a grand reception in Gusau, today (Tuesday).

The state had been wearing a new look since speculations of the governor’s defection bid started to spread.

As at Monday, all the billboards wearing PDP signs had been changed and replaced with those of the APC with the governor’s pictures spread all over.

Similarly, campaign vehicles which were laminated with PDP signs have completely disappeared while new ones with APC markings have taken over and going round town with new Matawalle APC songs.

Security agents found it very hard controlling traffic especially at the venue of the event even as the guests were yet to arrive while many people were seen on foot walking towards the venue.

A media aide to the governor, Mr. Yusuf Idris had earlier informed NAN in an interview that the governor would join the APC along with all 24 members of the state House of Assembly, 11 National Assembly members, all political appointees and their teeming supporters.

Also following the governor into the APC were all executives of the PDP at all levels in the state.

Meanwhile, the APC leader in the state and immediate past governor, Alhaji Abdulaziz Yari had welcomed the governor into the party.

Yari announced at a press briefing after holding meeting with some of the state’s APC chieftains in Kaduna that the APC had welcomed the governor with open arms.
