The 311 Artillery Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Minna, on Friday recovered body of the soldier who was declared missing after gunmen attacked their camp in Zagzaga community in Munya LGA of Niger.
The victim was the Resident Sergeant Major (RSM) of the Brigade.
After futile efforts by a combined search party comprising the Army and the youth in Zagzaga community on Thursday for the missing soldier, the swollen body of the late RSM was sighted in a nearby bush by one of the villagers on Friday afternoon.
The youth in the community, which was deserted after the Military shutdown the camp, quickly alerted the Artillery Brigade in Minna which came to evacuate the body.
The RSM was declared missing by the Army after armed bandits numbering about 60 invaded their camp in the early hours of Wednesday and engaged them in gun battle which lasted for several hours.
The gunmen burnt one of the Military vehicles and went away with one vehicle and five motorcycles.
The bandits equally burnt down the food store in the camp before evacuating their injured ones with the snatched Military vehicle which had yet to be found.
The Army had yet to make any statement on the attack on its camp since Wednesday even as it has temporarily shutdown the camp in what the Secretary to the State Government, Ahmed Metane, said was for tactical reason.
A security source confirmed that the gunmen during the attack which lasted for several hours took the military unawares.
Mr Abubakar Isa, a resident of Zagzaga village said that in Minna on Friday that the gunmen operated for more than two hours fighting the military personnel.
” They took away two Hilux vehicles and five motorcycles belonging to the military personnel but abandoned one Hilux on the road,” Isa Said.
