Road Accident; Akwa United players, officials in stable condition

The Coaster bus conveying the players and officials of Akwa United FC of Uyo was on Friday in Enugu, involved in an autocrash along Enugu-Onitsha expressway, with no loss of life.

Four players and two officials sustained minor injuries and were immediately taking to Enugu State University of Science and Technology Teaching Hospital  (Park lane), Enugu for treatment.

As at press time, the Federal Road Safety Corps, Enugu Sector Command had removed the accident vehicles from the scene of the accident to their office located at the New Market, Enugu.

The club striker, Ndifereke Effiong has been attended to, while the assistant driver and assistant coach were also receiving treatment on bruises they sustained when our reporter visited the hospital.

Speaking at the Park lane hospital, Rangers FC Team Managers, Amobi Ezeaku sympathised with the team and thank God for their lives.

On behalf of Rangers International FC board and corporation led by Davison Owumi, the General Manager, I sympathise with the management of the club over the unfortunate incident..

”I first of of all, thank God for preserving their lives.

”I have seen the players and officials, they are all stable and everything is under control.

”We cannot take away the fact that our roads are dead traps and accident of this nature claim lives,”he said.

He thanked God that the players and officials sustained minor injuries and  not death.

Ezeaku said the rate of accidents on the road by clubs in this new season is worrisome.

”We must find an easier way of making trips to away matches to alleviate the players and officials plight on road transportation.

”Bad roads, banditry and other vices are issues to tackle, I believe the League Management Company should look into the plight of road travelling.

”Club owners are not left out of this and they need to be sensitive to the plight and I hope that in the future, trips to matches will be made easy.

He suggested that trips that take up to six hours should be by Air of Rail depending on the connectivity between the two clubs.
