One person was on Friday confirmed dead as a result of a misunderstanding between a cobbler and an Housa cart pusher in Shasa market area in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The violence started on Thursday but reached its peak on Friday when the cobbler was confirmed dead as a result of injuries sustained during the clash.
An eyewitness to newsmen that the Hausa cart pusher stabbed the Yoruba cobbler with a knife as a result of a misunderstanding between them.
The witness said that the cobbler was rushed to the hospital for treatment and later confirmed dead on Friday morning.
He said that the situation led to the Yoruba traders and residents in the area mobilizing and storming the Shasa market on Friday to avenge the death of their colleague.
It was discovered that some shops and houses were set ablaze while the market was deserted, traders having hurriedly closed their shops and run for safety.
Security operatives which included the Police, the state Joint Anti-Crime security patrol team codenamed Operation Burst and Amotekun operatives were seen at different locations to ensure that normalcy was restored to the area.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Olugbenga Fadeyi, a Superintendent of Police confirmed the incident on Friday in Ibadan.
Fadeyi said that the violence erupted as a result of a minor misunderstanding between two persons which later resulted in the death of one of them.
The PPRO said that security operatives had been deployed to the scene of the incident while normalcy had been restored.
“ The Commissioner of Police, Ngozi Onadako and the SA to Gov. Seyi Makinde have been to the place to talk to the aggrieved parties.
“Some people just want to aggravate the situation but peace has been restored to the area,” Fadeyi said.
