Former Ekiti Assembly member, four others arraign over alleged riot, arson

A former House of Assembly, Dayo Akinleye and four others, were on Tuesday arraigned in an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court on a three counts of alleged arson, riot and felony.

The other defendants arraigned along with Akinleye are: Afolabi Ariyo, James David, Ajimoko Busola and Oyin Filani.

They were alleged to have been involved in riot that led to burning of three trailers, other cars and looting of the federal government silos and State Emergency Management Agency store, all located in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti state capital.

The police prosecutor, Mr Johnson Okunade, told the Court that the defendants committed the offence on Oct. 20 in Ado-Ekiti.

According to him, the defendants on the same date, allegedly conspired together to commit felony and riot which led to loss of property in the state.

He added that the defendants also burnt three Dangote trucks conveying cement, saying that the value of the damages was yet unknown.

Okunade said that the offence is punishable under Section 451 of the Criminal Code ,Cap. C 16, Laws of Ekiti State ,2012.

Counsel to the defendants, Mr Kola Kolade, prayed the court to grant bail to the defendants, saying that they were implicated.

He promised that the defendants would not jump bail and would always make themselves available in court.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Olanike Adegoke, consequently granted bail to the defendants in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties each, adding that one of the sureties must be a Civil Servant not less than grade level 12.

She later adjourned the matter to Nov. 11 for mention.
