Thai protesters rally in Bangkok after PM ignores resignation demand

Thai anti-government protesters rallied on Sunday after Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha disregarded their deadline to resign.

Prayuth said he won’t quit after attending a Buddhist ceremony on Saturday evening that focused on national unity after months of political tensions.

Several hundred protesters gathered around Bangkok’s major Ratchaprasong commercial intersection.

Police at the site read out an announcement that the event violated a public gathering law and asked protesters to leave within an hour.

However, the protest continued and authorities did not make an immediate attempt to break up the gathering.

At midnight, pro-democracy activists ended a two-day occupation outside Bangkok Remand Prison, where some of the main pro-democracy protest leaders were being held.

Meanwhile, a pro-government counter-demonstration was held near the parliament.

Another large-scale rally by pro-democracy protesters was planned for Monday outside the German Embassy.

Thai King Maha Vajiralongkorn, reportedly the world’s richest monarch, is criticized for spending long stretches of time in Bavaria, rather than Bangkok.

Protesters have become increasingly outspoken in their criticism of the monarchy, a once taboo subject in Thai society.

For weeks, thousands of people across the country have rallied to call for the government’s resignation as well as a new constitution and reforms to the monarchy.
