The House of Representatives has sought for immediate commencement of demarcation of boundary between warring communities in Nasarawa and Benue to curb incessant violence.
Rep. Abubakar Nalaraba (APC-Nasarawa) moved the motion on the floor of the House on Wednesday in Abuja.
In its resolution, the House urged the National Boundary Commission (NBC) to immediately commence the demarcation of the boundary between the warring communities to curb incessant crises
The House also mandated the committee on special duties to convene a meeting of relevant stakeholders for
the purpose of the boundary adjustment and demarcation.
Moving the motion, Nalaraba said that there was need for the NBC to clearly demarcate the boundary between
Nasarawa and Benue states.
The lawmaker noted the devastating effects caused by interstate boundary disputes across the country.
He said that over the years, lack of clearly defined boundary demarcation between some communities in Nasarawa and Benue had continued to bring complex security and socio-economic problems to the communities.
He listed the comnunities to include Awe, Doma and Keana in Nasarawa State and Guma and Makurdi in Benue States.
The lawmaker said before 1910, River Benue was the natural historical boundary line between Nasarawa
and Benue states.
He said that any land from the north bank of the River Benue was in Keana as well as Awe and Doma.
He said following discussions among colonial administrators, the boundary was adjusted further inland from the north bank of River Benue through the 1916, 1919 and1924 instruments of description.
He added that this was resisted by the Chief (Osana) of Keana as early as 1914.
Naralaba, while briefing journalists said there was no clear demarcation to separate both states, adding that there had been classes among the communities.
He said that once the border was created there would be demarcation, adding that the motion would benefit both the state and protect the right and privileges of Nigerians.
