Sanusi said the programme was designed to avail students the opportunity to learn at home.

“The lockdown came at a time when JSS III students are preparing for their examinations, therefore, instead of them to remain at home without reading, we decided to commence such programmes to serve as revision for them,” he said.

Sanusi said the programmes would be broadcast on the state owned radio and television stationd, and carried on the newspaper outlets, focusing on English, Mathematics and other science subjects.

The commissioner noted that such programmes would educate the students and keep them prepared for their examinations.

Sanusi said the state government was considering sustaining the learning programmes during breaks even when the pandemic was over.

While commending the philanthropists who sponsored the programmes, Sanusi called on wealthy individuals to emulate the gesture for the development of education sector in the state.

Meanwhile, Dr Danlami Hayyu, the Executive Secretary, Kano State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), said the board was also sponsoring similar programme for primary 1-3 pupils in the state.

Hayyu said the programme was being implemented in collaboration with United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and other development partners.

He explained that the programme tagged: “Distance Learning Education” focused on teaching numeracy and literacy through radio.

The executive secretary added that the programme is aimed at motivating and educating pupils from  their homes to achieve academic excellence.
